Why are so many Americans chasing work, rather than chasing their dreams? Because the government got in the way.

Hi Friend,
Why are so many Americans chasing work, rather than chasing their dreams?

Because the government got in the way.

Occupational licenses used to be required in only a few industries, but the number of jobs requiring government permission has ballooned. Today, one in five jobs requires some sort of government license, compared to one in twenty in 1950. (For example: florists, social workers, interior designers, massage therapists, tax preparers, and HVA contractors.)

Licensing requirements have made it difficult, if not downright impossible, for some workers to get that all important foot in the door, practice in their chosen profession, or get into an industry that is in dire need of more workers.

These occupational licenses, fees, tests, and other requirements vary by state and industry. They often are divorced from the actual work someone performs on the job and aren’t related to protecting public safety or welfare.

These requirements can become so costly and burdensome that they block people from working, especially people who lack resources, such as money or education, and who need these opportunities most. The penalties for operating without a license can be costly: fines or even jail time.

Americans shouldn’t have to jump through unnecessary hoops to work. Government shouldn’t be preventing people from getting a job and contributing to the economy.

Do you have a story to share about how occupational licensing hurt or hindered your ability to work? ([link removed])

We’d love to hear from you,
Friend.
Your story could be featured on our first-of-its-kind storytelling campaign called “Chasing Work.”

Drop us a note ([link removed]) for a chance to be featured in this groundbreaking project that will expose the truth about how overregulation hurts, not helps, American workers.

Thanks,
