COVID-19 Preparedness

The ever-changing health landscape and media reports can be unsettling, especially as the Governor announced the closure of all K-12 school in the Commonwealth. I’ve been in meetings with the state Department of Health and know that the Commonwealth is prepared. After talking with health professionals, we do anticipate that more Pennsylvanians will be diagnosed with COVID-19 in the coming days and weeks. While the Commonwealth is prepared, it is important for all of us to take our own steps to prepare and prevent. Right now, you have a higher chance of testing positive for COVID-19 if you have traveled to a country or state with known community outbreaks or have come in contact with someone who has the virus. Knowing where the virus has been diagnosed is an important step. I’m sure by now you’re tired of hearing this but I’m going to say it again – the most important things you can do are: Wash your hands, don’t touch your face, cough or sneeze into your elbow and avoid sick people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Health have great resources available on their websites.

COVID-19 and my offices

At this time, my offices in Lewistown and Bellefonte remain open to the public and ready to serve you. As the situation changes, we may get to a point where we may need to limit in-person constituent service in order to protect the public and staff.

If you have any questions or concerns involving state government, or would like to express your opinion on an issue, please do not hesitate to contact me. My staff and I pledge to strive to make your state government more accessible and helpful to you. Before visiting one of my offices, I suggest calling first to ensure that the office is open to the public. As always, we will be available by telephone and e-mail.

The Governor has closed the Capitol in Harrisburg to all visitors. At this time, the Senate will be in session next week to address legislation that will be helpful at this time. This is a good time for a reminder that all Senate floor action and any committee meetings scheduled during this time will be streamed and archived online at https://pasenategop.com.

Lewistown Real ID Seminar

Effective October 1, you will need a federally accepted form of ID to board a commercial flight or visit a secure federal building. A Pennsylvania REAL ID driver’s license or identification card meets this requirement, as does a U.S. Passport or military ID.

From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. April 21, 2020, at Rec Park, 108 Montgomery Ave, Lewistown, Rep. John Hershey and I will host a seminar to learn about who needs REAL ID and when they need it. The discussion will include what documents are needed to get a REAL ID and the costs associated with the application. RSVP to Rep. Hershey’s Office at 717-436-6001.

Make PA Count!

Now is the time! The 2020 Census is underway, and I urge you to fill out your Census form.  Please encourage relatives, friends and neighbors to fill out and return their forms as well.

The 2020 Census will provide a snapshot of our nation’s population, and the results are vitally important to our state. This once-a-decade federal requirement generates information that helps businesses, researchers, and communities make important decisions. It also determines congressional representation, and is used to direct hundreds of billions in federal funding to communities nationwide for hospitals, fire departments, school lunch programs, and other critical programs and services. So please, take the time to be counted.  To learn more, click here.
