John --

As we all confront the Coronavirus (COVID-19), I want you to know that my top priority is to ensure that those who are on the frontlines of this crisis have everything they need to keep our communities safe.

A few updates: I’m encouraged that President Trump has declared a national emergency to address this crisis, which will unlock additional federal funds. I also support many local decisions to postpone large gatherings or to temporarily close as we work to prevent the spread of COVID-19 cases in our region. And lastly, I am glad to share that San Diego Gas and Electric and Southern California Edison have issued assurances that they will not shut off utility service to those who are unable to pay during this crisis.

In Congress, we are poised to pass the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. This bill will guarantee paid sick leave and ensure that low-income children have what they need while schools are closed. We’ve also moved to increase federal funds for Medicaid. This bill needs to be signed into law without delay and I won’t leave Washington until this bill passes the House.

In the meantime, please keep safe during this time. If you’re sick, stay home. If you develop a fever or cough, call your doctor. Avoid large gatherings. Practice good hygiene -- wash your hands and avoid touching your face. In summary, you should follow the guidelines outlined by the Centers for Disease Control here.

I want to extend gratitude to our health care professionals who are risking their own health and safety to protect others. And I want to thank everyone who is doing what they can to stop the spread of the virus.

I will continue to share updates as they come.

Mike
