The current health and economic crisis presents a huge danger to at-risk workers, families, and precarious people of all ages in Santa Fe, in New Mexico, and across the country and world. Without a social safety net, people living paycheck to paycheck risk job loss, homelessness, and displacement.
We must demand a complete rent moratorium in the City of Santa Fe and, furthermore, a complete ban on evictions during and after the public health crisis.
Please call the Office of the Mayor as well as the Office of the Governor to demand these actions be taken as soon as possible. Scripts are available below, for those who need:
I am a citizen of New Mexico/of Santa Fe and I am calling to demand that Gov. Lujan Grisham/Mayor Webber put a moratorium on evictions during this state of emergency.
Countless New Mexicans face lost wages as a result of the Coronavirus public health crisis. Many of us work without paid sick leave. Having to pay rent for fear of eviction only compounds the issues facing New Mexicans and keeps us living in fear.
Furthermore, an eviction during this state of emergency would be a serious risk to a person’s health. Without a place to wash their hands, sleep safely, rest, recuperate, people are much more likely either to contract a serious case of coronavirus OR to spread the virus to those around them. Shutting down evictions protects the people’s health.
I, and my fellow New Mexicans, are demanding the governor/mayor to shut down evictions immediately.
Thank you for your time.
This script is adapted from a script currently being used in New York City, drafted by Brooklyn Law School NGL Chapter. If you have any questions about calling, please respond to this email and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
Please try to call the offices before 5PM today. We will resume calling on Monday.
