Hello,

More than one thousand Americans have been diagnosed with a disease caused by the novel coronavirus, including over 20 cases in Pennsylvania.

The World Health Organization has classified this outbreak as a pandemic. The number of cases will likely continue to rise as more tests become available to diagnose existing cases and as the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread.

Last week, I worked with my colleagues in the Senate to pass an emergency funding bill that included at least $16.9 million for Pennsylvania to help fund public health emergency preparedness activities.

This is a very serious public health crisis, which requires government response, in addition to engagement with research universities and the private sector. Each of us has the power and responsibility to take action.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has provided science-driven updates on the outbreak, and guidance on how to prevent the spread of COVID-19. I encourage you to visit the CDC's website for more information, and also to follow common-sense guidelines like washing your hands frequently, limiting your contact with people who may have been exposed to the coronavirus, staying home while you're sick, and avoiding touching your face, eyes, ears, and mouth.

As the outbreak continues, I will continue working with my colleagues in the Senate to pass emergency legislation to address this crisis, and I will do everything I can to implement solutions.

The threat we face is real, but together we can meet this challenge and overcome it.

Thank you,

Bob
