Dear Friend,

With your support, Cultural Survival is addressing the critical needs of at-risk Indigenous communities. Will you help us build a future guided by the wisdom and leadership of Indigenous Peoples? ([link removed])

Thanks to your support, on September 20-24, in Cape Town, South Africa, Indigenous Peoples from Africa and abroad gathered for a powerful exchange of experiences about implementing Indigenous rights in the context of mineral extraction, specifically about implementing Free, Prior and Informed Consent.

Together with over 50 participants from organizations and communities in South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the United States, we held sessions on understanding tools to advocate for self-determination, discussed the impact of mining for transition minerals in Indigenous territories, and created a space to share experiences and knowledge.

As the first event of its kind hosted by Cultural Survival and our partner organizations in the African region, participants provided us better understanding of their realities while demonstrating that the true and valuable knowledge about Indigenous Peoples is in the communities — and that is where we should look for answers and solutions.

“I’ve been to many conferences and this is by far the best one I’ve ever attended. There’s a number of things we’ve been grappling with and now we’ve found strategies for how we can do things better.”

– Anthony Williams (Bushman), South Africa Exchange Participant

We need your help ([link removed]) to continue to provide all Indigenous communities with opportunities to connect, exchange knowledge, and stay informed about their rights. In observance of the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, on Human Rights Day, we ask you to give generously in support of the Indigenous communities we work with, and help us reach our end-of-year goal! Together, we can build a world where every Indigenous voice is heard, and every right is upheld.

The right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent means that governments have to inform indigenous communities about any development projects they want to start in their territories, and listen to their opinions before beginning the project.
