I’m honored to introduce you to Kumari Powell, an ARC Member and one of the most inspiring youth I know. I met Kumari when he was incarcerated in juvenile hall and he is now a union worker, a proud father, and an engaged ARC Member living in one of our transitional housing sites. INSIDE PROGRAMS ([link removed])

As a former juvenile lifer, Kumari spent a portion of his life incarcerated. It wasn’t until he came into weekly contact with an ARC Credible Messenger Mentor that Kumari saw his potential and believed in his ability to change for the better. That chance was made possible by effective policy reform championed by ARC just this year that led to the closure of the juvenile facility where Kumari was placed in!

RIDE HOME PROGRAM ([link removed])

Upon his release, Kumari participated in ARC’s Ride Home Program, where a formerly incarcerated person met Kumari at his release, shared a meal with him, and provided Kumari with insights on his path to re-entry. This made him feel less alone on his journey home, as he was welcomed by someone who knew exactly what he was going through.

TRANSITIONAL HOUSING PROGRAM ([link removed])

Following his release, Kumari joined ARC’s transitional housing program, which offered him safe shelter and the resources he needed to successfully reintegrate into society. Through this program, we empower our young people on their journey home by providing life skills, counseling, academic and employment resources, community events, and support in helping them build their self-worth. This transitional phase was instrumental in Kumari’s rehabilitation and eventual transformation.

Kumari embodies a remarkable determination to persist and never give up. This resilience became apparent during his participation in our 11-week Pre-Apprenticeship Cohort program. Through this initiative, he acquired invaluable skills and training, paving the way for meaningful employment. Today, Kumari is proudly employed as a modular installer in the Carpenters Union.
