John,
In a horrifying turn of events, the Texas Supreme Court has just prevented a pregnant woman with a fatal fetal diagnosis from getting abortion care. This patient has already endured four visits to the emergency room, a devastating diagnosis, and the public spectacle of seeking court permission to have an abortion. Now she is being forced by the state to stay pregnant, putting her health at risk, despite the fact that her fetus almost certainly cannot survive.
This story is absolutely wrenching. And it isn’t an isolated incident—in Ohio, a woman is being prosecuted after having a traumatic miscarriage at home at 22 weeks of pregnancy. She, too, was turned away when she tried to access medical care.
These horrifying stories are just a few examples of the devastating consequences when politicians wield legislative power over pregnancy. So we need to hear from you: do you agree that we should be able to make our most personal medical decisions without the interference of politicians?
Pregnancy is complicated enough without the addition of legal hurdles. Politicians trying to control reproductive healthcare results in patient suffering: in emergency rooms, in courtrooms, and in trauma. Whether someone receives a devastating prenatal diagnosis or simply knows that they do not want to carry a pregnancy forward, they should be able to make that decision without the input or interference of politicians.
If you agree that our personal medical and family decisions should be made in doctors offices and the comfort of our homes—not in legislative chambers and courtrooms—sign on and let us know.
In solidarity,
Maris Nyhart
