I never thought I’d become an activist, but everything changed when my son Jordan was shot and killed in November 2012.

As a grieving mother, I decided I had to turn my pain into purpose. I began working as an organizer and activist for gun safety organizations and eventually ran for Congress in a district deemed impossible for Democrats to win. So-called “experts” told me not to raise the issue of gun safety reform in Georgia, but I knew my community better.

I’ve become a leading voice on gun violence prevention in Congress, but a recent court ruling has put my reelection into question. Republicans in the state legislature just redrew the Georgia Congressional maps, and the district I represent is now tilted toward the GOP by +20.
