Hi -- In case you missed it, we wanted to resend this urgent email from earlier this week, pasted below. -- Demand Progress Action Hi, Since Donald Trump appointed Louis DeJoy to run the U.S. Postal Service, delivery times have slowed, postage prices have risen, and pretty much everything else he’s done has been a fiasco. Now it’s about to get worse, because DeJoy just announced plans to reduce seasonal hiring for the holidays by nearly two-thirds from last year and almost 80 percent compared to 2021.1 It’s a recipe for a total dumpster fire, and it’s all part of DeJoy’s disastrous 10-year plan that’s running the post office into the ground. Louis DeJoy should be fired immediately, and Demand Progress has already mobilized more than 100,000 people to contact Congress and the Biden administration. Now, after these inexplicable reductions to holiday season hiring, we need to turn up the heat.
We all need the postal service — especially during the holiday season — and not just for gifts and holiday cards. People rely on the postal service for prescription drugs, Social Security checks, and other essential needs. And it’s especially vital for rural and Indigenous communities, where for-profit companies won’t set up shop because they won’t make enough money.2 But Trump-appointed DeJoy, a former corporate CEO who has donated over $1 million to Republicans since 2016, simply doesn’t believe in the U.S. Postal Service’s mission as a public service.3 He wants to run the post office like a profit-seeking business. That’s why he’s slashed hours for workers and rolled out a plan to close post offices and sorting centers.4,5 He’s raised fees twice a year, above the rate of inflation, and has forced some neighborhoods to go weeks without mail delivery.6,7 We’ve mobilized over 100,000 people to demand that DeJoy be fired. With the holiday crunch about to lay bare all the damage DeJoy is doing to the postal service, now is the time to turn up the heat.
