There’s an article that came out a couple of weeks ago, and I wanted you to hear the truth from me directly. I didn’t intend for this to go public. But now that it is, I owe it to you all to tell the whole story.
Several weeks ago, I received a call from a major donor worth more than $100 million. This is a guy who gives lots of money to Republicans like Rick Snyder and super PACs trying to unseat progressives in Congress.
I pick up the phone, and here’s what he basically says to me:
‘Hill, we want you to drop out of the U.S. Senate race. We want you to primary Rashida Tlaib. And if you do, we’ll line up $10 million in super PAC money supporting you. Plus we’ll get you $10 million more in bundled campaign contributions.’
They were dangling money and power in front of me. I said no. You watch movies and shows and imagine this is how politics works. But you never expect to actually receive a call like this.
I will not be bossed, bought, or bullied.
They want to use their money to get me to drop out of a historic Senate race against one of their candidates. A race we can win. They want to fund me running against Rashida Tlaib. They believe their money can control the outcome of not just one, but two incredibly important elections in Michigan. I am one of the only U.S. Senate candidates who has called for a ceasefire which, by the way, the vast majority of Michigan Dems also support.
By refusing their money, I know I’ve made myself a target, too. But I did so because I believe we can only win this race by building an unprecedented grassroots movement. By holding true to the principles we believe in.
The answer is clear: we must get big money out of politics. If you agree, will you sign on to my petition?

Special interests and big-money donors believe they can buy anyone. Think about all the calls they’ve made where the person on the other end took that money.
We all feel like government isn’t working for everyday people — we ask ourselves why the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, why government can’t do anything to address the problems in our lives. Whether it’s guns in schools or spiraling health care costs or inflation. Calls like this are part of why, because big-money donors and special interests too often dictate the agenda.
I’m running to uncorrupt our campaign finance system. But that makes me no friend to the establishment, which was put in power by the wealthy donor class.
The last thing they expect is for us to build a grassroots movement strong enough to fight back against their millions of dollars. And that’s exactly what we can do with your help. So, please, sign my petition today if you’re with me.
