Dear Friend,
Corruption, theft, and tax evasion cost developing countries more than a trillion dollars every year. Just imagine what the world could look like if those funds were put to good use, feeding people in need, strengthening critical healthcare facilities, and fighting the devastating effects of climate change.
Corruption is also a root cause of nearly every armed conflict. Warlords use various forms of corruption to finance their armed forces. Corruption undermines the rule of law, facilitates the illicit use of resources, and inhibits peace processes by creating warped incentive structures.
Dirty money is at the heart of the problem, but for The Sentry, it is also part of the solution. Our investigative team follows the money connected to war criminals and profiteers as it is laundered through the global financial system. Since being founded in 2016, The Sentry has exposed the corrupt activity of some of the world’s deadliest war criminals and their international accomplices, delivering the evidence needed to impose sanctions, asset freezes, and travel bans on some of the worst human rights offenders and major facilitators of corruption.
Today, on International Anti-Corruption Day [[link removed]] , we want to take a moment to recognize that we do not stand alone in this fight. Everyone—the public, media, government officials, civil society, and the private sector—has a role to play if we are to overcome this global problem.
We are deeply grateful to all of The Sentry’s partners and donors for their generous support and tireless commitment. We truly could not do this work without each and every one of you.
Thank you all for standing with The Sentry in the global fight against corruption.
Sincerely,
Greg Hittelman
Director of Communications
