I have something I’d like to share with you, friend. Today in America, we’re facing the public health crisis of our lifetime: Guns are the leading cause of death for children, there have been more mass shootings than days in the year, and the deadliest form of gun violence — firearm suicide — has hit record highs.
But through it all, I maintain hope because I believe in Brady’s evidence-based solutions.
Since Jim and Sarah Brady, our fearless namesakes, we’ve never shied away from tackling this crisis head-on. We passed the landmark Brady Bill, establishing our nation’s background check system, banned assault weapons in 1994, and, just last year, ended a 30-year hiatus on federal gun safety legislation.
We’ll never stop fighting to strengthen our nation’s gun laws. But we also know that laws alone are not enough. That’s why Brady follows the same roadmap used by successful movements to curb smoking, promote seatbelt use, and prevent drunk driving: 1) change the laws; 2) change the industry; 3) and change the culture. This approach has proven successful in curbing public health epidemics, and we know it can have the same impact on America’s gun violence crisis.
That’s what we call the “Brady difference” — combining our legacy of policy change with our research-based industry oversight and behavior change campaigns. And evidence shows we’re saving lives.
Please take a moment to watch this video about the “Brady difference” and share it with your friends and family. |

Brady Secures Over $2 Million Settlement on Behalf of Victims’ Families Against One of Nation’s Largest Gun Dealers “This settlement sends a clear message to members of the gun industry that if they choose to participate in negligent and unlawful business practices, they will be held accountable.”
— Brady Senior Counsel and Director of Litigation Erin Davis |
Last week, with the support of Brady’s legal team, the family members of Charles David Carver, Johnny Coxie, and Meagan Leigh Coxie reached a settlement of more than $2.4 million against Academy Sports + Outdoors, one of the nation’s largest gun dealers. In 2016, Charles, Johnny, and Meagan were found shot and killed on the property of a now-convicted serial killer. The killer, who was legally prohibited from buying a firearm, used a firearm that was sold by Academy Sports + Outdoors in an illegal straw purchase.
We uncovered that Academy Sports + Outdoors sold a dozen firearms in ten different transactions to a straw purchaser, who then supplied the gunman with the murder weapon. Had Academy Sports + Outdoors acted responsibly, Charles, Johnny, and Meagan may still be alive today.
While we cannot bring them back, we at Brady are proud to have represented their families and to work toward ensuring no other family suffers in this way. Please join us in learning more about Brady Legal and our life-saving efforts to reform negligent gun dealers and represent families and victims impacted by gun violence.
