If there’s anything I’ve learned at Catholic Charities, it’s that everything is possible.
In the Gospel today, Jesus surveys the needs of his people – they are sick, troubled, and abandoned, and he tells his friends to go and serve. Jesus sends his disciples – he sends us – into the darkest of places. Into places where people need us the most. The harvest is plentiful – the opportunities to serve those around us seem endless and there are so few of us who take up this calling.
But we have. And the master of the harvest has sent us, instructing us to do the impossible.
Cure the sick? Sure – show them to me. Drive out demons? Ok – what’s next? Raise the dead? Hold on - let me move my 2:00pm. Absolutely everything is possible.
I’m amazed at the impact of my colleagues here at Catholic Charities. Over my time in this ministry I’ve witnessed miracle after miracle brought about by teams of people armed with nothing more than a relentless commitment to deliver results for the most vulnerable members of our communities.
As we wait patiently for the baby that will be King of the Universe, let’s be unflinching in our hope. Our belief that tomorrow can be better than today should be manifested by tenacious and unwavering efforts to make it so.
Everything is possible.
