Entrepreneurs and small business owners have long been known for bringing jobs, culture, and economic opportunity to our communities, especially in rural areas. But in the world today where the average American household is having to spend over $11,000 a year more than the year before, consumers are not so quick to visit Main Street for goods and services.

High taxes, overregulation, and unrestrained government spending put our economy in a chokehold and limits prosperity. Record-high inflation, rising interest rates, supply chain shortages, and uncertainty for the American consumer are direct results of failed governance and reckless spending. We must prevent the federal government from leading us any further down this dangerous path.

With President Biden behind the wheel, our national debt skyrocketed to over $33 trillion—equating to over $100,000 per person. Today, the average American is spending less than ever before because they simply cannot afford basic goods in this economic state.

Since the beginning of the 118th Congress this year, we have been working to mitigate the harm done by those dangerous economic policies seen over the past several years. And as a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, I am fighting to balance the budget and bring a common-sense conservative approach to federal spending policies for the good of the American people.

This week, I participated in a hearing with the House Committee on Natural Resources where I discussed my bill, the Parity for Tribal Law Enforcement Act.

This legislation would improve hiring and increase retention for tribal law enforcement officers in order to better protect native communities, increase law enforcement presence rural areas, and help address the crisis of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls (MMIW).

Native tribes in Central Washington and across the nation are encountering significant barriers in recruiting and retaining law enforcement officers for their reservation lands.

While their communities are combatting the MMIW crisis and high crime rates, they must be well-equipped to protect families and local businesses. The Parity for Tribal Law Enforcement Act empowers tribal law enforcement with the necessary resources to ensure the safety of all our communities.

This week, I testified before the House Committee on Agriculture to promote key provisions and urgency for the Farm Bill reauthorization.

As Chairman of the Congressional Western Caucus, a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, and as a third-generation farmer representing Central Washington, it is a privilege to represent our hardworking agricultural producers.

The Farm Bill impacts all Americans, and this legislation must be carefully crafted to promote American agriculture, preserve our premiere research institutions, improve forest health to prevent catastrophic wildfires, and provide a safety net to ensure the long-term success of America’s agriculture industry. 

I am committed to passing a Farm Bill that strengthens the future of American farmers who are struggling with high input costs, labor shortages, and supply chain disruptions that make it difficult for farmers to make ends meet.
