Eagle Forum is pleased to endorse the Disengaging Entirely From the United Nations Debacle “DEFUND” Act, introduced in both the Senate and House by Senator Mike Lee (R-UT), Chip Roy (R-TX), and Mike Rogers (R-AL). The bill will protect our national sovereignty by withdrawing the United States from the United Nations (U.N.) and World Health Organization (W.H.O.), preventing all voluntary contributions to these organizations, removing the United States from all U.N. conventions or agreements, and requiring ratification by the United States Senate as a condition of rejoining any U.N.-affiliated entity.
For too long, the United Nations has sought to internationalize policies that belong in the purview of sovereign nations – from promoting abortion, enforcing the Left’s climate agenda, encouraging digital currencies and vaccine passports, redefining “sex”, and becoming the ultimate authority on pandemic response. The United Nations and its cadre of affiliated organizations, such as the World Health Organization, allow Communist countries to dictate measures that violate America’s Constitution.
According to Sen. Mike Lee, “Since 1945, the U.S. has ceded incrementally greater sovereignty to the United Nations system under the auspices of the altogether illusory ‘customary international law.’ Despite the internationalists’ appeal to ‘soft power,’ U.S. dollars are used to make a mockery of our values and interests and those of our allies. Our contributions have given refuge to terrorists through UNRWA; facilitated coercive abortions under the guise of ‘reproductive healthcare’ at UNFPA; provided political cover for the W.H.O. to act as China’s mouthpiece; and continue to provide the financial backing for the General Assembly to engage in blatant bias against our allies.”
Eagle Forum President Kris Ullman applauded the introduction of the DEFUND Act, stating:
The United Nations and World Health Organization’s policies have been destructive to American sovereignty. Our founder, Phyllis Schlafly, sounded this alarm against the United Nations almost 30 years ago when she wrote, “The U.N. is a monument to foolish hopes, embarrassing compromises, betrayal of our servicemen, and a steady stream of insults to our nation. Every [U.N. Treaty] is a dagger pointed at our American Bill of Rights, our concept of federalism, and our national sovereignty.” Phyllis was right then, and Senator Lee and Congressmen Roy and Rogers are right now. The federal government must no longer be a part of the United Nations – an organization that disrespects the rights of member nations and works against American values.
