#WeShowUp with Steadfastness, Political Commitment, and Love

Dear Friend,

As we continue our #WeShowUp End of Year Fundraising Campaign, we wish to spotlight two of our partners working to advance food sovereignty: La Via Campesina International and Mouvman Peyizan Papay (MPP).

La Via Campesina was formed by peasant movements in the early 1990s to demand that people, not corporations, shape their own food and agriculture practices. Grassroots International is proud to have accompanied La Via Campesina since its early days, and our partnership has only deepened over the years. We currently support operations of La Via Campesina on the global, regional, and national levels, as well as partner with many of its member organizations. In fact, three of our staff are currently in Colombia participating in La Via Campesina’s international meeting.

Among the members of La Via Campesina with whom we partner directly is Mouvman Peyizan Papay (MPP, or Papaye Peasant Movement) of Haiti. MPP was established in 1973 and was one of the initial organizations to align with La Via Campesina when it was founded. Since its inception, MPP has since grown to over 60,000 members who work to reclaim Haiti’s independence from global food imports through fostering local food economies based in agroecology.

We were fortunate to host a few leaders from MPP at Grassroots International’s 40th Anniversary Celebration earlier this fall. Check out this short video for a few words that MPP leaders shared about MPP’s long-term partnership with us.

We are proud to share that MPP is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and is being honored with the 2023 Food Sovereignty Prize for its critical work to advance food sovereignty in Haiti and globally. Join the celebration on Thursday, December 14 to hear insights from MPP and the Black Dirt Farm Collective, winners of the international and domestic categories for the 2023 Food Sovereignty Prize respectively.

“When we received word of this honor during our Food Sovereignty Camp, 450 young peasant leaders let out a thunderous cry of joy,” said MPP leader Jusléne Tyresias. “Through MPP’s 50-year history, Haiti’s peasants have persisted, not only confronting multiple crises head-on, but planting seeds – literally and figuratively – for our people to live with dignity, safety, and sovereignty.”

Will you support this critical work of food sovereignty for another 50 years going forward?

Your support has been essential to the wins of the food sovereignty movement, and we need your continued support to propel these social movements forward into the future and towards liberation.

In Solidarity,

The Staff at Grassroots International

P.S. Will you make your first donation today to our #WeShowUp End-of-Year Fundraising Campaign to support social movements on the journey to liberation?
