If the November 2023 election showed us one thing, it’s that we can count on Democratic moms to win tough races because voters trust moms to get it right. Together, we helped trailblazing pro-choice Democratic moms flip the House and hold the Senate in Virginia, we protected abortion in Ohio, defeated extremist Moms For Liberty opponents, and more.

Across the country, voters rejected the GOP’s attempt to take us backwards— by decades— and it took the power of moms to stop them. But the current system still isn’t built to make it easy for moms to run for office. That’s why we work to break down these systemic barriers, so that our pro-choice Democratic moms can get to the real work of making a difference in their communities.

Just look at what’s been going on recently with Vote Mama endorsed candidate Emma Mulvaney-Stanak who is running for Mayor of Burlington. If she wins in 2024, she would become the first woman and first mom to ever hold that seat. Recently, on live radio, Emma was asked if elected, would she recuse herself from work during her “time of the month.” She was also asked how she could possibly juggle being a legislator and a mom at the same time.

If you’re disgusted and outraged by these comments, you’re not alone, John. This kind of ignorance and sexism is rampant in politics — but who we have on the ballot and who we elect is what shapes these types of conversations. So if we can shift the narrative to normalize and empower moms running for office, we can change the result.
