While my team and I fight back against unfair Congressional maps proposed by Georgia Republicans, I thought I’d take a step back and discuss how we got here in the first place.

Since I first ran for Congress in 2018, the GOP has put a target on my back. I ran on a platform of gun safety reform, stemming from my work as an activist and organizer in the movement.

This made me a threat to Republicans (and the gun lobbies that fund them). So much so that they first tried to gerrymander me out of Congress in 2021, redrawing the district I represent to be heavily Republican.

However, I refused to back down. My grassroots supporters had my back, and I returned to Washington DC to continue fighting for legislation to keep our communities safe. In fact, earlier this week one of my bills – a federal Assault Weapons Ban – made it to the Senate Floor.

I do this work because it’s personal, John. When my son Jordan was shot and killed in 2012, I promised myself I would do whatever it took to make sure no more mothers had to feel the pain I felt – and still feel to this day.

It’s also more relevant than ever before. Just last weekend, the US set a record for the most mass shootings in a year ever.

Regardless of what the GOP throws at me, I won’t quit. That’s why I’m set on returning to Congress in 2024. However, the new maps drawn by Republicans are putting my reelection campaign in serious jeopardy.
