John,
Under Mayor Breed’s leadership, San
Francisco is moving swiftly and decisively to help those suffering
from mental illness or addiction.
SB43, our new state conservatorship
law, provides critical medical treatment to individuals who suffer
mental illness or addiction that causes them to be a danger to
themselves or others. While other counties have “pumped the brakes” on
using this new law, Mayor Breed is making sure San Francisco is ready
to implement the law on January 1st.
By expanding the criteria for
conservatorship, San Francisco will be able to get those on our
streets who are most troubled into the care and treatment they
desperately need, and ensure residents, businesses and visitors feel
safe on our streets.
"We plan to begin filing paperwork to put more people into
conservatorships or involuntary psychiatric holds as soon as it takes
effect next year," said Mayor Breed.
In October, Mayor Breed issued an
Executive Directive to ensure that City Departments were coordinated
and would be ready to start helping people on day one. The Mayor’s
Office, the Department of Public Health, San Francisco Human Services
Agency, and the City Attorney’s Office have all been working closely
to meet that goal.
Can you chip in today and support Mayor
Breed’s work to get people the help they need and make our city
safer?
