** Gender nonconforming sexual minorities at heightened risk for lower socioeconomic status
------------------------------------------------------------
New research from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health finds that gender-nonconforming sexual minorities have a greater risk of experiencing poorer economic status compared to gender-conforming heterosexuals, including living in poverty, carrying household debt, falling behind on bills, and experiencing foreclosure or eviction. Educational attainment was associated with a slight reduction in the risk of poverty.

Williams Institute Senior Fellow and Director of International Programs Ari Shaw was on Capitol Hill on December 5 to brief Senate staff on our recent report, Democratic Backsliding and LGBTI Acceptance ([link removed]) . The briefing was convened by New Jersey Senator Cory Booker with support from the Council for Global Equality, the Human Rights Campaign, and Health Gapdas and included Ugandan activist Victor Mukasa and Alice Kayongo from the O'Neill Institute at Georgetown University.

** We're accepting applications for our 2024 Global LGBTQI+ Seed Grants Program

The Williams Institute's Global LGBTQI+ Seed Grants Program is designed to encourage new empirical research focused on LGBTQI+ populations in the least developed, low- and middle-income countries ([link removed]) as well as amplify voices of researchers from those regions. In partnership with SAGE ([link removed]) , we are offering a separate grant to foster research and data collection specifically on LGBTI older adults (ages 50 and above) in the region.
