The Right to Homeschool is Threatened in Michigan!

Dear Friends,

Your right to educate your own children may soon be under attack. Rep. Matt Koleszar (D-22) recently posted online and is quoted in the media about wanting to force all homeschoolers to be registered with the state. See this short interview with Rep. Koleszar and Israel Wayne, with the Michigan Christian Homeschool Network.

This attempt to demonize homeschooling is outrageous and dangerous. Rep. Koleszar and Attorney General Dana Nessel want people to believe that homeschooling parents should register their children as a way to prevent possible child abuse. They are targeting homeschooling to divert attention away from the state’s own foster care and CPS agencies that have systemically failed the children they are supposed to protect (See here.)

As Rep. Jamie Green stated “Requiring homeschool students to register with the state is an egregious violation of parental rights, an invasion of privacy, and an unwarranted government overreach."

Registration leads to regulation, meaning the state could decide which curriculum, hours, etc you are allowed to use in your own home.

Current Michigan law is on our side! You have the right to educate your children—without the state's registration or regulations!

"It is the natural, fundamental right of parents and legal guardians to determine and direct the care, teaching, and education of their children." —Michigan's Revised School Code

But if Rep. Koleszar and those legislators who agree with him get their way, it won't be long before this right is gone. We will fight against any and all threats to the future of homeschooling in Michigan, but we can't do it alone. We need your help to ensure this issue does not gain traction and make sure those representing Michigan know where we stand!

ACTION NEEDED:

Call or email Rep. Matt Koleszar's office AND your own representative. Tell them why the right to homeschool is important to you. Ask them to VOTE NO on any bills that threaten that right.
