Today in America, it will not surprise you to hear, the people at the top have never had it so good. The top 1% now own more wealth than the bottom 92% and the 50 wealthiest Americans own more wealth than the bottom half of American society — 165 million people.

So yes, life has never been better for the billionaire class of this country.

But what about working people in America? What about the average American?

With all the advancements and progress in technology, medicine, worker productivity, women's rights, racial justice and more, have things gotten better or worse for them?

There was a Pew Poll that came out recently and, I must tell you, the results of that poll really shocked me. When asked whether Americans believed that life for them was better or worse today than it was for people like them 50 years ago, almost 60% of people believe that life is worse today.

Let me repeat that: almost 60% of those who responded believe life is worse for people like them than it was 50 years ago.

In other words, despite all of the changes we have seen in the last 50 years — computers, cell phones, artificial intelligence, robotics, 150-channel cable TV systems — a majority of Americans believe that the quality of life in this country for ordinary Americans has declined, that we are heading in the wrong direction.

So what do you think?

Can you use this link to tell me if you believe life for people like you is better or worse than it was 50 years ago? And please tell me a bit about why you believe that is the case.

I should tell you that my Senate office recently sent this same question out to Vermonters. We expected a few dozen responses. We received almost 2,000. That is an extraordinary response for a small state and tells me that people are thinking hard about this question.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to tell us what you think.

In solidarity,

Bernie Sanders
