The Brooks Range in northern Alaska is a vast, virtually unchanged Arctic landscape. Every year the majestic Western Arctic caribou herd — the largest in the state — crosses through the region on its great migration. Now these caribou and other wildlife are under threat from a 211-mile industrial mining road.
The Ambler mining road will carve a massive corridor of devastation across the beautiful Brooks Range. It will cut through millions of acres of the Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, while also degrading and polluting countless rivers and streams, damming tundra wetlands, and endangering the people and wildlife of northwest Alaska.
Approving the road could also open the floodgates to widespread mining — international mining companies are already exploring multiple open-pit mines in the Arctic.
