Contribute to the Summit of the Future 

Scheduled for September 2024, the Summit of the Future will be an event aimed at forging a new international consensus on how the global community can deliver a better present and reshape our sustainable tomorrow. At the end of the Summit, Member States will negotiate the Pact for the Future, an outcome document focused on key issues, including sustainable development and financing; peace and security; science and innovation; youth and future generations; and the reform of global governance. 

The Summit’s co-facilitators, H.E. Antje Leendertse from Germany and H.E. Neville Gertze from Namibia, have initiated the consultation processes and are inviting civil society and other stakeholders to contribute to the zero-draft of the Summit of the Future’s outcome document to be released in early January 2024.

Join the virtual consultation with civil society and other stakeholders on 13 December 2023 to share your priorities, expectations, and make concrete suggestions for the Summit.   

At COP28, UN Chief Calls for a Fairer Global Financial Architecture  

Last week’s COP28 agreement to operationalize the Loss and Damage Fund was a positive step forward in supporting vulnerable communities hit hardest by climate change and least responsible for it. But, in remarks delivered to the High-Level meeting of the Landlocked Developing Countries earlier this week, Secretary-General António Guterres urged Member States to “go further still.” 

“We must reform the deeply unfair global financial architecture so that it better represents developing countries and better responds to their needs,” Secretary-General António Guterres told the gathered delegates.  

“We need an international financial system that meets the needs of LLDCs with an effective debt-relief mechanism that supports payment suspensions, longer lending terms, and lower rates. We need international financial institutions to fully align with the Paris Agreement.”

In Search of an Economic System that is “People-Centered” - How Fairtrade Works for an Equitable Future for All

Fairtrade has long placed people, families, and communities at the center with the aim of achieving fairer trade conditions and securing decent livelihoods for farmers and agricultural workers.  

And, according to Juan Pablo Solis, Fairtrade International’s Senior Advisor for Climate and Environment, people must remain at the center of all efforts tied to climate justice and the re-founding of an equitable global economic system.   

“We urgently need a global economic system that is people-centered,” Mr. Solis explains. “As long as our political and social decisions continue to be dictated by economic profits, we will remain far from achieving the 2030 Agenda.” 

At COP28, Fairtrade's call for climate justice goes hand-in-hand with its urgent appeal for an equitable global economic system. 

In developing countries around the world, small and midsize enterprises (SMEs) provide ~60% of all employment, supporting the livelihoods of billions globally. At COP28, UNDP Insurance and Risk Finance Facility (IRFF) and global insurance firm GENERALI hosted the side event “Accelerating SMEs’ Resilience in a World of Growing Climate Risks,” to explore the role insurance companies play in coordinating, fostering and enabling transformation, and raising awareness on climate risk and adaptation.
