Dear Friend of the Journal,
I’m working on this week’s newsletter, and I wanted to take a quick break to make sure you saw our previous email about how you won’t find National Geographic on US newsstands starting in 2024. If you missed it, I’ve included that email below this brief message.
Last week, even more newsroom cuts were announced: Popular Science announced the end of its 151-year-old magazine, while both CNBC and Vox Media laid off climate reporters.
I’m thankful Earth Island Journal isn’t subject to the profit-thirsty whims of big corporate media owners.
More importantly, I’m thankful our newsroom has a supportive community of people — readers like you — who know how valuable independent journalism is. Reader donations are critical to keeping the Journal unique. We are accountable to you, not to ad dollars from corporations. And that gives us the courage to speak truth to power.
Can we count you as one of our supporters?
Yes! I'll support the Green Journalism Fund!
Thank you for reading,
Zoe Loftus-Farren
Managing Editor, Earth Island Journal

Dear Friend of the Journal,
In June, National Geographic laid off all of its staff writers.
Starting in January, the historic magazine with its iconic yellow border will no longer be sold on newsstands in the US. This is all in the name of cost-cutting, to deliver more profits into the pockets of the Walt Disney Corporation, which acquired the magazine in 2019.
Some days it feels like a miracle that Earth Island Journal has managed to hold steady and cover the environment for four decades without pause. Yet here we are in 2024, continuing to provide you with the deep, nuanced, and intersectional reporting on the environment that our magazine has come to represent.
This has only been possible because of you — our strong community of readers and supporters who value independent journalism. That’s why I’m hoping we can count on your continued support. Please donate to our Green Journalism Fund now.
Yes! I'll support the Green Journalism Fund!
Reporting on environmental movements around the world is costly and time-consuming. Funding from our readers is key to our news gathering. I’m grateful to everyone who contributes to the Journal. Like you, they know that fact-based, principled reporting is critical to a robust democracy.
Your contribution supports the future of investigative reporting on climate change, land and wildlife conservation, and environmental justice issues worldwide.
Please take a moment to join this mission by donating to our Green Journalism Fund. Our secure online form is quick and easy, and donating any amount makes a big impact.
