John,
On Tuesday, Senate Democrats introduced legislation to reinstate the assault weapons ban. The very next day, Republicans blocked this life-saving legislation. I'm ready to go to Washington and work to pass an assault weapons ban, but I need your support. Will you make a donation to my campaign? >> [link removed]
As an eighteen-year-old cadet at the US Air Force Academy, I underwent weapons training on the M-16, the military version of the AR-15. At the end of a day, our weapons went into secure storage. We understood the dangers of this weapon and knew it had no business threatening our communities of untrained civilians.
As a trauma surgeon, I’ve seen firsthand the devastating toll gun violence has on patients, communities, and our country. As of this month, 2023 is officially the deadliest year on record for mass shootings – with more than 40,000 lives lost.
The headlines are a constant reminder of just how deadly life has become. Just yesterday, six people lost their lives at the hands of a gunman in Austin and San Antonio. In the same night, three people were gunned down at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Assault weapons are weapons of war and have no place on our streets.
We can end this never-ending cycle of gun violence and carnage. We've taken action in the past, and it’s time for our government to do it again.
Mass shootings decreased during the decade of the assault weapons ban from '94-'04, and had an immediate and steep increase after it expired. We can promote healing in our communities with legislation that centers on saving Americans.
It’s long past time to reinstate the assault weapons ban in America. Senate Democrats are taking bold steps toward reform, but we need to ensure this legislation has the support of a Democratic-led House if we want any chance of seeing it signed into law. Onward,
