What’s Wrong with a Free Lunch?Nothing, except it’s not free. Someone pays for lunch.The most common question I have been getting as I discuss the “Factory Reset” coming January 1 is “Why won’t Groups be free?” Let me address that question directly.

As conservatives, we understand that any product or service costs something to provide. Free markets mean that buyers and sellers are free to decide whether to transact with each other or not. There is no coercion. There is freedom to choose. The products and services are not “free”.

Creating the Caucus Room platform has taken more than four years and large amounts of funding. Ongoing operations require ongoing expenditures to keep the “lights on”, maintain the site and provide improvements and bug fixes. We have decided to take off the training wheels and see whether Caucus Room can take off on its own as it supports conservatives in their change efforts through providing virtual meeting places.

With the internet, there are various ways to “monetize” the activity of content users. Buying and selling products is the most straightforward, and easily understood. Sites can also sell advertising based on the user base. Sites can provide access to their users by selling on site promotions to third parties The most misunderstood by users of websites is the sale of their user data to third parties.

Caucus Room has decided intentionally that it will no longer sell advertising or access to our Members by third parties beginning January 1. We have never sold our Members’ data or information and will not in the future. Those choices are what we believe are in the best interests of our Members and our purpose. That leaves a single avenue to pay for “lunch”: Charging a fee for Group usage. Membership in your neighborhood will continue to be provided without cost to the Members.

The pricing established for Groups to form on Caucus Room Live of $24 per month for groups up to 50 Members and $50 for groups larger than 50 is intended to be cost competitive, particularly when you consider what you are unknowingly giving away on so-called “free” sites. We look forward to finding out from you over the next few months whether we are providing a platform of value greater to you than the cost. That is what makes for a very good lunch.
