In the last week, our Ground Game legal team has filed two lawsuits on behalf of Texas voters. In Bell County, we are suing the City of Harker Heights because they refuse to add our voter-approved marijuana reform to the City Code. And here in Austin, we are suing the City on behalf of our community partner, Equity Action, because the City has failed to fulfill a police oversight ballot measure.
We call this work “accountability.” And it is absolutely critical — because sometimes, even when an overwhelming majority of voters adopt a new policy, local bureaucrats refuse to comply.
John, in Austin, 79% of voters approved the “Austin Police Oversight Act” in May 2023, but to this day, City staff have refused to implement key provisions. To help our partner Equity Action, we’ve lent the services of our general counsel and political director, Mike Siegel, to represent their organization in state court.
The Bell County lawsuit is based on a similar situation — 64% of Harker Heights voters approved marijuana reform, but City staff won’t even add the policy to the City Code. We’ve exhausted all other options – legal action is our best remedy.
