Refugees in the Horn of Africa caught between conflict and climate crisis

Ongoing rains cause damage to refugee shelters, latrines and forces families to relocate to higher grounds.

Dear John,

Our world is changing. This holiday season, some families will only see snow on a postcard. In some areas, the climate crisis is increasing rainfall. For some, violent storms have already swallowed their homes.

For refugees in the East and Horn of Africa, severe flooding and drought are forcing them to flee once again. Caught between conflict and the climate crisis, they face devastation nearly everywhere they turn.

Thanks to kind supporters like you, our teams on the ground are saving lives and rebuilding homes.

“The trees we are planting with UNHCR give us hope. They are not just trees; they are a symbol of new beginnings for us and for the generations to come."

We don’t have a moment to lose. Your generous donation today will help refugees like Fatima lead land restoration and plant seeds of hope in Ethiopia, provide clean energy solutions in Kenyan camps, and support refugees in Somalia and South Sudan to prepare for drought and record-breaking rains.

In Ethiopia, people forced to flee conflict seek refuge in a remote area where thousands of Ethiopians were already displaced due to drought. Our teams are helping refugees find shelter and over 2.57 million tree seedlings have been planted in refugee-hosting areas.

In Somalia, floods and drought continue to wreak havoc. Harvests and livelihoods are being destroyed, leaving people forced to flee struggling to meet their basic needs. UNHCR is providing relief items and cash assistance to families relocating to less flood-prone locations.
