On the eve of the UN’s CoP28 climate summit in Dubai, our new report revealed the success of the Global Methane Pledge is hanging in the balance due to a lack of oversight. Methane is the world’s second most damaging greenhouse gas and the Pledge was conceived to urgently address it with a collective commitment to reduce emissions by 30 per cent by 2030 – but our report Closing the Gap reveals it is currently unable to deliver due to inadequate funding and shortcomings in its governance framework.

** A busy agenda at CITES Standing Committee ([link removed])

EIA sent campaigners from our UK and US offices to the 77th meeting of the Standing Committee of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Our team tracked issues as varied as protecting totoaba fish, saiga antelopes, Asian big cats, elephants, rhinos, pangolins and West African rosewood. We also made interventions from the floor to call for trade sanctions against Laos and better reporting from countries in the National Ivory Action Plan process.
