National Domestic Workers Alliance

============================

John — I'm Adela, a nanny living in New York City. As an immigrant, it was just me and my children. I didn’t have family living near me. When I walked into the NDWA We Dream in Black (WeDiB) offices, I found a place for me to be my whole self.

I learnt how to address issues like NYC laws on overtime and hourly rates with my employer. I supported other nannies, domestic workers and elder care workers who are often handed a weekly salary without a clue if it meets the legal minimum wage requirements.

But WeDiB is not just about addressing challenges; it's a movement to fuel the dreams of countless Black domestic workers striving for dignity, fair wages, and respect.

That's why I'm reaching out to you, John.

Your donation to NDWA's We Dream in Black project will directly contribute to training programs, advocacy efforts, and other campaigns to empower and uplift domestic workers. Will you donate today?

As I reflect on my early days, I realize how crucial the information I learnt was — a game-changer that opened my eyes to the unfair treatment so many care workers face EVERY day. The information I learned at the monthly meetings became a source of empowerment.

Since then, my involvement has grown into leadership. Thanks to NDWA's community and resources I am able to help other workers calculate their hours, ensuring they receive fair compensation.

Overall, I'd like domestic workers across the country to have the same rights as any other profession—to have protections and benefits in place. I also want to focus on making sure these laws that we win are enforced. There's still a lot of workers that aren’t aware of what their rights are.

That's why we need your support to engage and empower MORE workers in the coming year.

Will you donate today and help bring us closer to a future where domestic workers are universally valued, protected, and empowered?

My journey is a testament to the challenges faced by domestic workers after migrating to the U.S. The NDWA team gave me a family where I could grow professionally and personally.

That’s why I’m so focused on encouraging other care workers to become a part of this movement. We work in isolation but WeDiB is a community that provides support.

This is a movement and we’re bold and strong, but we need your support to keep moving forward. Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us closer to a future where domestic workers are valued, protected, and empowered.

Thank you,

Adela
