Province Adopts Changes to BC Building Code

The Province has adopted changes to the BC Building Code (BCBC 2024), with most code changes coming into effect on March 8, 2024.

In response to CHBA BC and other industry feedback, adaptable dwellings and earthquake design changes will come into effect on March 10, 2025.

In its announcement, the BC government says the changes are intended to provide people with a greater level of building safety and to make new buildings more sustainable, resilient, and accessible. Click here to read the full announcement.

New Housing Legislation Will Impact Planning and Approvals

Addressing B.C.'s housing crisis dominated the Provincial fall legislative session and was the focus of many pieces of legislation. Three housing bills will significantly change the way municipalities plan and approve new housing, whether it be a secondary suite, multi-unit or transit-oriented development. Expanded and new funding tools were also introduced to help municipalities with the cost of providing the infrastructure and amenities required to meet increased growth.

Upcoming Deadline to pre-register for FortisBC's New Home Program Rebate Program

New pre-registration requirement: To be eligible for the 2023 New Home Program rebates, you must submit a pre-registration form on or before December 31, 2023.

Please note the final deadlines to apply for gas offers within the 2023 New Home Program:
  • December 31, 2023, is the final date for builders to submit pre-registration form.
  • December 31, 2025, is the final date for projects to be completed. You have up to six months from project completion to submit your rebate application.
  • o For example: if the completion date is October 15, 2025, your rebate application must be submitted by April 15, 2026.

Note: FortisBC is designing a new program for 2024 which will address the revised DSM regulation and the building code changes. Click here for more information about the pre-registration requirements.

B.C. Boosts Construction Sector with New Immigration Focus

B.C. is enhancing its construction sector by including 25 new occupations in the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (B.C. PNP), which started Nov. 16.

This policy change reflects the province's response to the urgent need for skilled labour in the construction industry.

The targeted occupations encompass a wide range of essential trades such as welders, plumbers and electricians. These inclusions represent a welcome addition to the province's other areas of focus such as early childhood educators, tech, health care occupations, veterinarians, animal health technologists and veterinary technicians.

Another resource, the Labour Market Outlook report is a 10-year forecast that helps future and current post-secondary students, organizations, people seeking retraining and employers with the most up-to-date information to make informed decisions on careers, skills training, education and hiring.
