Hi, We are on the path to decarbonizing our power sector, but the power grid itself is a threat to that transition. To hit our goals, we need to build 17 times more transmission lines per year than our current pace.
Put more simply: no transmission, no transition.
To build all these transmission lines, we need to reform how those projects get permitted—and do so without allowing more fossil fuel projects to be permitted alongside clean energy. With permitting reform stalled in Congress, we need President Biden and state leaders to take the wheel and steer us to the clean energy future our communities and climate demand. And we have good news: they have the power to permit a ton of clean energy and transmission without giving fossil fuels an inch.

Our latest policy paper shares concrete steps the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Department of Energy, permitting agencies, and state legislators can take today to make this transmission transition a reality. It'll require: -
Transmission planning
- Interconnection reform
- Community engagement and Tribal consultation
- State siting and permitting updates
- And more
It's time we shifted away from an outdated, fossil fuel-focused grid, and we can't wait on Congress to act. By taking the immediate steps we outline in our report, the Biden administration can rapidly and equitably build out the clean energy grid, cut pollution in communities, and create more clean energy jobs. |
Onward,
