Fellow Arizonans,

As a physician and the Chairwoman of the Republican Party of Arizona, it is important to me to see us all healthy. With the recent developments on COVID-19, commonly known as the Wuhan coronavirus, it is important that we are all aware of what we can do to mitigate its effects and respond appropriately.

During this cold, flu, and allergy season, we should already be taking precautions to protect ourselves, and those around us, against more common illnesses that can harm our well-being and disproportionately hurt those with weakened immune systems. This is even more important as the coronavirus has been added to the list of illnesses going around.

While those who contract the coronavirus may experience similar symptoms to common seasonal illnesses like the flu, it is important that they closely monitor their symptoms. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), symptoms for the coronavirus are fever, a dry cough, and shortness of breath. These symptoms may appear anywhere between 2-14 days after exposure.

If you are experiencing these symptoms, or know that you’ve been exposed to someone who may have the virus, reach out to your county's Department of Health for guidance rather than rushing to the hospital or doctor’s office. I’ve listed the telephone number for each county’s health service department below.

Furthermore, if you are over the age of 65, and/or suffer from a chronic illness or ailments such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, renal disease, or other similar chronic issues, it is encouraged that you refrain from any unnecessary trips from your home, and avoid large gatherings of people. Below are some other helpful tips for keeping healthy and safe during this season.

Practice good hygiene:

  • See the CDC’s recommendations here.

Be careful with meetings and travel:

  • Use video conferencing for meetings when possible
  • When not possible, hold meetings in open, well-ventilated spaces
  • Consider adjusting or postponing large meetings or gatherings
  • Assess the risks of business travel

Handle food carefully:

  • Limit food sharing

Stay home if:

  • You feel sick
  • If a family member is sick at home
