Members of the Jewish faith tonight begin their celebration of Chanukah, a commemoration of their religious freedom and perseverance. These themes take on a new urgency this year as in the wake of Hamas’ attack on Gaza, Jews across the world and here in New York are fighting rising anti-Semitism – the ferocity of which I have not witnessed in my lifetime.

Today in the New York Daily News [[link removed]] , I share my thoughts in detail about what needs to be done to combat this repugnant and dangerous development.

The fear is real as some synagogues are considering canceling Chanukah celebrations to prevent inviting protests and violence. Absurdly, public officials in Virginia and Maine are arguing whether including a menorah or a Star of David in their holiday displays is “offensive.”

Our Jewish brothers and sisters need more than words of support. For non-Jews it is critical that in deeds and actions we stand by our friends and neighbors at this crucial moment. Government needs to enforce the law and take these anti-Semitic threats seriously - send out the National Guard to guard Synagogues. Citizens need to show solidarity and stand with their Jewish friends and neighbors.

I plan to start to attend Friday night Shabbat services and encourage others to do so as well.

History taught us the lesson of inaction. “Never again” means act now.
