A single page of fiction can cover 1,000 years of in-story time; 1,000 pages of story can take place in an instant. That's a neat bit of magic, and it profoundly bothers the kind of people who study literature. Experts have spent years — decades, even — trying to gauge how fast most in-story clocks tick. They tediously counted the words in thousands of books; they laboriously hand-coded computer programs to measure the passage of fictional time. Yet for all their brute-force efforts, they couldn't agree on something as simple as how much time the average page of fiction covers.

Given a well-designed prompt and a passage of fiction, ChatGPT could ingest the text and spit back a fast, precise estimate of how much time had elapsed in the passage. A chunk of "Jane Eyre"? About a week. A passage of the same length from "The Big Sleep"? Seventy-five minutes. Over the past few hundred years, the bot calculated, literary time has been slowing down. The average page of literature used to cover an entire day of time; now it barely gets through an hour.

To be clear, chatbots don't read, and Underwood knows it. They don't have opinions on how good a detective Philip Marlowe is. But a bot can do all sorts of interpretive tasks that used to be thesis fodder for overworked literature students. And from that data, Underwood believes we'll finally be able to see the bigger picture — one that can be grasped only by surveying and analyzing centuries of literature, in hundreds of languages.

Apple passed the $3 trillion threshold once again Tuesday, with the Cupertino, CA-based tech giant on course to finish the year as the world's most-valuable company for the fifth time in a row.

Shares had climbed 2% by the end of the trading session, which boosted Apple's total market capitalization to $3.01 trillion, according to data from Refinitiv.

It's the first time since August that the company has been worth more than $3 trillion, after a so-so couple of months where concerns about its reliance on sales in China weighed on shares. Apple's earnings report for the July-September quarter showed its revenue from the Asian nation dropped 2.5%, amid signs that the world's second-largest economy is faltering with growth stagnating and property prices tumbling.

The value of companies listed on India's stock exchanges hit $4 trillion for the first time on Tuesday - narrowing the gap with Hong Kong, Bloomberg reported.

Hong Kong is the world's fourth-largest stock market, but is now worth less than $4.7 trillion following an 18% slide in the Hang Seng Index this year.

In contrast India's two main indexes, the Sensex and the Nifty, are up 13.3% and 14.6% this year.

The world this year pumped 1.1% more heat-trapping carbon dioxide into the air than last year because of increased pollution from China and India, a team of scientists reported.

The increase was reported early Tuesday at international climate talks, where global officials are trying to cut emissions by 43% by 2030. Instead, carbon pollution keeps rising, with 36.8 billion metric tons poured into the air in 2023, twice the annual amount of 40 years ago, according to Global Carbon Project, a group of international scientists who produce the gold standard of emissions counting.

Limiting warming to 1.5 degrees is “just possible’’ but only barely and with massive emission cuts, said Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Chairman Jim Skea.
