John — I had the opportunity to speak with a retired longshoreman a few months back, and I just had to share his story.

I asked him how he was doing in his retirement.

And he said, “When I was a longshoreman, I didn’t go to the doctor unless I was bleeding…Now that I’m retired, I go all the damn time. And this union gave me health care.”

That’s what labor does for people. It gives them a chance to be paid fairly and retire with dignity.

Day after day on the campaign trail, I hear incredible stories from hard-working people who are concerned about whether their pay and benefits will be enough to support themselves and their families.

The reality is that our economy is not working for far too many people.

And the problem isn’t that people aren’t working. It’s that people are working and still can’t make enough to get by.

That’s why this longshoreman’s story has stuck with me. The power of collective bargaining through a union has paved the way for workers to get better wages and benefits, safer working conditions, and a dignified retirement.

From the start of my career, I’ve stood shoulder to shoulder with the labor movement. I launched this campaign at the IATSE Hall — the home of the labor union that powers our film and television industry. I’ve marched on picket lines with striking writers and actors, and I’ve introduced legislation to give them access to the unemployment benefits they depend on while they’re fighting for all of us.

I’m going to keep fighting to protect workers, like the retired longshoreman I met on the campaign trail. From the writers and actors to autoworkers and Amazon factory workers, the labor movement is driving progress toward making the economy work for everyone, and in the Senate, I will never stop fighting for working people.

If you support my fight to pass legislation empowering our workers, securing fair and equitable working conditions, and creating good-paying union jobs, please contribute to my campaign for U.S. Senate today. With our FEC deadline at the end of this month, your support makes a real difference.
