John,

As I was preparing my remarks for tonight’s national vigil for victims of gun violence, I got several texts about the latest shooting. This time at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

While details on the ground are still developing, this much is clear: Thoughts and prayers for the people affected by gun violence are not — and will never be — enough.

WE NEED ACTION.

Let me say that again: WE NEED ACTION.

And we won’t stop until we win.

As young people die, our lawmakers watch and do nothing to stop it. Earlier this week, the U.S. passed our own record of most mass shootings in a single year.

What's even more upsetting is that Senate Republicans blocked an assault weapons ban and background checks bill — policies that are proven to reduce gun violence — earlier today.

I look forward to the day I can talk to people about gun violence as history and not a headline. The day when college students aren’t traumatized by active shooter lockdowns and sending their last texts to their loved ones.

But we're not there yet.

So today, we mourn with our siblings in Nevada over yet another uniquely-American tragedy. Tomorrow, we organize and we fight like hell to end this national nightmare.
