Last week I told you about our new Vote By Mail in Jail report and our overall 79.4% incarcerated voter turnout rate. If you haven’t read the report, you definitely want to.

The VBMIJ Report

While our overall rate was 79.4%, some of our jails had much higher turnout. In fact, at Cook County Jail in Illinois we achieved a 100% turnout rate. 270 voters registered, and 270 turned in ballots.

How did we do it? We partnered with the incredible organization Chicago Votes, we made custom voter guides specifically for incarcerated voters in Cook County, and we supported Chicago Votes’ thrice weekly visits to the jail. By working with local partners, providing all of the resources an incarcerated voter needs, and communicating with the incarcerated voters as much as possible, we significantly increase the rate of people who both register and then follow through to vote.

2024 is going to be a tough year but we are working to make the only national incarcerated voter program as big and successful as possible. We can’t do it without you. Will you help us reach even higher turnout in 2024?

Support our 2024 efforts

Thank you as always,

Kat
