FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Flood Update: Skagit River Has Crested and Is Receding
As of this afternoon, December 6, 2023, the Skagit River in Concrete and Mount Vernon have both crested and are now receding. The Skagit River in Concrete is currently below flood stage and continues to recede. In Mount Vernon, the Skagit River has remained below 30 feet. As a result, the Skagit County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will be deactivating today at 2:00 p.m. The Skagit County Department of Emergency Management will continue to monitor river levels and impacts as necessary.
There are a few important things to keep in mind as waters recede.
_*Risk for landslides*._ Given soil saturation levels and warm temperatures, the risk of landslides remains, so be aware and cautious.
*_Water over roadways._* There continues to be water over numerous roadways in Skagit County. DO NOT DRIVE AROUND ROAD CLOSED SIGNS. For a list of county road closures, visit www.skagitcounty.net/reporting/roadclose [ [link removed] ]. For a list of Washington State Department of Transportation road closures, visit [link removed] [ [link removed] ].
* _Recording damages._ *Skagit County is aware your residence or property may have been damaged during the recent flooding/severe weather event. To help assess the amount of damages, Skagit County officials will be surveying damage to roads and property across the county. This assessment will help FEMA determine whether Skagit County will qualify for state and/or federal financial assistance. We are currently putting together forms and additional information about how to report damage and will notify the public as soon as we can.
*_Stay connected._ *Flooding is not the only emergency our community may face. One of the most important things you can do to be prepared and stay informed for emergencies is to sign up for CodeRed Alerts [ [link removed] ]or follow us on Facebook @SkagitCountyWA or on Twitter @SkagitGov.
Thank you to all the community partners, volunteers, and staff who responded to the emergent needs of our community during this event.
