Jack, the hits to news media outlets keep coming: In the face of an ever-declining ad market, which makes up a large portion of revenue, Vox media just announced its second round of layoffs for the year.

A statement from the union representing Vox employees said:
This is the second major round of layoffs at Vox Media this year, and some of our most vital reporters and video production team members, who are voices on key issues including climate change, policy, and tech, have lost their jobs. Our colleagues produce crucial journalism that should not be subject to the whims of executives or advertisers.
Daily Kos has also struggled to make ends meet in the face of declining advertising revenue. Earlier this year we were forced to make hard decisions and cuts in hopes of finding a more financially sustainable path forward. Unfortunately, with the uncertainty of the economy, many companies are cutting back on their advertising budgets, and advertisers are paying less for people to see their ads, it's just become harder and harder to cover our expenses with ad revenue.

News outlets have been gutted this year. This comes at an absolutely critical time as we approach the 2024 elections where Trump, the Republican presidential-nominee frontrunner, has "been waging an all out war on American democracy." Our democracy depends on an independent press educating and informing voters.

Daily Kos has survived during difficult financial times because of the generosity of our readers and activists. As we gear up for the 2024 elections, support progressive, independent news with a donation of $5 or more to Daily Kos.
