With 2023 coming to a close, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the first half of the 118th Congress – one of the least productive legislative sessions in recent memory, unfortunately.

With this year’s second feckless GOP Speaker leading a discordant, destructive House majority, even the most basic government processes have broken down. Even Republicans have had enough – just look what GOP House Member Chip Roy had to say:“I want my Republican colleagues to give me one thing — one — that I can go campaign on and say we did. One... come explain to me one material, meaningful, significant thing the Republican majority has done… ”

Fair point, Rep. Roy! A year into the 118th Congress, when it comes to legislative accomplishments, the House GOP majority doesn’t have much to offer:

❌ Started the year with an unprecedented 15 rounds of votes to elect Kevin McCarthy as Speaker –forcing McCarthy to make serious concessions to the farthest right, MAGA members of the conference

❌ Then, led by Matt Gaetz, the far-right ousted Kevin McCarthy as Speaker – a historical first for our nation – because he wouldn’t give in to their most extreme demands

❌ Held the Speaker’s seat vacant for 22 days because, despite having the majority, they couldn’t gather enough votes to elect Rep. McCarthy’s successor

❌ Brought the government to the brink of shutdown twice – relying on Democrats to bail them out in the eleventh hour each time

And throughout all this dysfunction, hard working Americans are awaiting action on numerous issues. We’ve been sent to Washington to find solutions; sadly, that doesn’t interest the current Republican majority.

Will you let me know what you think of the House GOP majority in 2023? Share your thoughts →

Americans deserve representatives who are working for them – not stalling progress and obstructing the basic functioning of the government in favor of partisan games. If you’re able, friend, will you please share your thoughts on the GOP’s performance this year? [[link removed]]

I look forward to seeing the results,

– Madeleine
