Jack, the data is clear: Automatic voter registration (AVR) reduces barriers to voting, saves money, and increases accuracy while protecting election integrity.

When you renew or obtain official identification, such as a driver’s license, you have to provide key information such as proof of identity, residency, and age. The same information you need to register to vote. We could simplify the process of voter registration by automatically registering eligible voters when obtaining an ID.

Twenty-four states and the District of Columbia have opted for AVR—which has dramatically increased turnout among young people, voters of color, and low-income voters. In states without AVR, registering to vote leads many to delay or forget until the voter finds that they are ineligible to submit a ballot.

With the 2024 election looming and right-wing attacks against our freedoms unrelenting, curbing impediments to voting—like actually getting registered—is critical to protecting our communities and democracy. It is time to modernize our voter registration system so that every eligible voter is on the rolls, giving more Americans a voice.
