Parental substance use can have long-term effects on children's health and development. Providing adequate addiction care to parents is important – not only to treat the parent with addiction, but also as critical prevention for their children.

📢 Help expand access to treatment for parents with substance use disorder

Pregnant and parenting individuals often face steep barriers to addiction care, despite the many health and social challenges substance use and addiction contribute to – for both parents and their children.

Stigma and fear of child removal often prevent pregnant and parenting individuals from seeking care. Health care providers are often required by law to notify child protective services when a newborn has been exposed to substances. But family separation can negatively impact parents’ recovery as well as children’s health and development.

Ask your members of Congress to support the SAFE in Recovery Act to take a health-focused, rather than punitive, approach to addiction by:

- making addiction care more accessible for parents
- preventing undue family separation
- ensuring effective treatment and wraparound services are available for families
