ACLU Supporter, less than 18 months after Roe v. Wade was overturned, anti-abortion groups are asking the Supreme Court to gut access to the most common method of abortion in this country. Right now, the Court is deciding whether to take up a case in which anti-abortion groups are trying to take a medication used in most abortions in this country off the shelves in every state. They are trying to prevent people from accessing the medication – even though it has been used safely and effectively by over five million people since the FDA approved it more than two decades ago and is the gold standard for miscarriage care. If the Supreme Court gives into these groups, we could lose access to this medication nationwide, in all 50 states – despite the critical role it plays in abortion and miscarriage care. The dangerous lower court rulings cannot be allowed to stand. The Supreme Court should take this case – and refuse to give in to the anti-abortion movement. We could know as soon as this Friday whether the Supreme Court will take this case – which is why we must send a clear message that we will not tolerate any threat to our right to safe, essential health care. This case is just the next step after the reversal of Roe v. Wade in the anti-abortion movement's attempt to ban abortion nationwide. And if the Supreme Court ignores mountains of scientific studies and allows anti-abortion groups to impose restrictions on mifepristone or reverse the FDA's approval of the pill, it will have far-reaching consequences for the drug innovation process as a whole. ACLU Supporter, this case has no legal, medical, or scientific basis. We cannot allow the courts to give in to the most extreme demands of the anti-abortion movement. The ACLU will always fight to protect our fundamental right to an abortion – and we're so grateful to the thousands of supporters who have already joined our movement to protect medication abortion. Thank you for all you do, The ACLU Team |
