I pursued so much because I believed it would make me less deportable, but we deserve to stay in this country simply because we live here.

John,

My name is Gissela. I’m a Pre-Law Fund Recipient and an Immigrants Rising featured storyteller ([link removed]) .

A couple of years ago, I had an important realization that changed the trajectory of my career: I was very emotionally drained from working on immigration issues. I realized so much of my life revolved around my status: being seen on social media, constantly excelling, constantly trying to get the next internship or scholarship. I pursued so much because I believed it would make me less deportable, but our worthiness does not depend on our status or accomplishments. From that day on, I shifted how I see myself and where I place my worth.

After that, I started thinking about other areas that sparked my interest that I hadn’t allowed myself to imagine before. That’s how I ended up where I am now, in my second year of law school studying the intersection of law and technology. I’m grateful to Immigrants Rising for building career programs like the Pre-Law Fund, where undocumented students can create community and get financial support to remove some of the barriers law school places on us.

I no longer see myself as an undocumented person at the mercy of others. Instead, I see myself as capable of imagining and working towards my future as if there’s no immigration reform in sight—in part because it feels like there isn’t. As I look toward the future, I want the next generation of undocumented students to know they are so much more than their status. I want them to know that so much is possible that they may not even have allowed themselves to imagine yet.

In community,
Gissela Moya
