Yesterday, World Health Organization officials declared coronavirus a pandemic. This health crisis is impacting lives across the world and demands an immediate and urgent response from our top leaders.
But just as soon as the WHO rang the alarm, Trump and the GOP weaponized it. The Administration wants to tie a bailout for Big Oil to a bill to provide aid funding for the coronavirus.
We can’t let the GOP hold Americans’ health hostage to the fossil fuel industry -- but we need your help to stop them!
Tell your Senators: Don’t exploit the coronavirus crisis to help Big Oil!
Since the first cases of coronavirus were announced, the Trump Administration has failed at a proper response. Trump has constantly misinformed the public -- saying everything from “The coronavirus is very much under control in the USA” to “This is a flu.”
Here are the facts: COVID-19 is a global pandemic that has swept into at least 114 countries. It’s infected nearly 120,000 people globally. And it’s killed more than 4,000 people. More than 1,000 cases have already been identified in the U.S. alone.
The Trump Administration is seizing on a moment of crisis to pad the pockets of their billionaire Big Polluters friends. The fossil fuel industry already receives billions of dollars of wasteful taxpayer subsidies each year. Adding more to that pile would put more communities at risk and more carbon in the atmosphere. And it would be squandering taxpayer dollars that should go toward people impacted by the virus, not polluting corporations.
Stop the Trump Administration from using coronavirus to benefit Big Oil!
Right now, our leaders must protect people from getting sick and from the other disruptions to their lives. They must ensure workers can make decisions to stay home and not expose others without risking losing their jobs. That should be the priority -- full stop.
It’s no surprise that the fossil fuel industry is trying to use this moment to their benefit. But it is utterly appalling that Senate Republicans are going along with it.
