This year, even more than ever before, the news is in crisis.
More than 17,000 news media jobs were cut in the first six months of 2023, at national and local outlets including at some of the biggest names like NPR, the Texas Tribune and Gannett. In fact, newsroom layoffs are up 20% from last year. Some of these outlets laid off more than 10% of their staff in the last few months — even as we head into a critical election year.
Even more than those numbers, the quality of the media we read online and see on television is at an all-time low. The messages shared by some media outlets are divisive and biased, spinning facts into falsehoods on a daily basis.
But all is not lost.
Here at The American Prospect, we’re on a mission to provide clear analysis and historical perspective so you can stay informed about who has power, what they’re doing with it, and how the fruits of our democracy can instead be broadly shared by all of us.
How is that possible? It’s all thanks to readers like you. Our newsroom is different from other outlets that rely on corporations: we’re strengthened by supporters who believe in the power of journalism that can dispel myths.
Today, during our end-of-year campaign, consider becoming a member. Our newsroom — and our nation — will be stronger because of you.
