The Hill ([link removed]) (3/12/20) reports: "Environmental groups are warning that discarded single-use face masks used to prevent the spread of coronavirus could harm the environment. Single-use face masks are appearing on beaches and nature trails in Hong Kong after the semi-autonomous city’s 7.4 million people have been using them every day, Reuters reported...These activists have said the masks have intensified the pollution problem occurring off mainland China. Gary Stokes, the founder of the environmental group Oceans Asia, said he found 70 discarded masks within 100 meters of the beach and an additional 30 masks when he returned a week later, Reuters reported. 'We only have had masks for the last six to eight weeks, in a massive volume...we are now seeing the effect on the environment,'he told the news outlet...The city has already struggled with recycling with 70 percent of the
city’s waste every year going to a landfill, according to Reuters."

(3/11/20) reports: "The federal government intends to designate plastics as toxic substances, a move industry stakeholders say is unduly aggressive and detrimental to the sector’s brand. Listing plastics as toxic under Schedule 1 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) will provide the government with the authority to regulate and limit certain products. The Liberals campaigned during the fall election on a promise to ban some single-use plastics as early as 2021, as part of a national strategy to reduce waste and pollution. In a minority parliament, it is considered more expedient for the government to use the existing act than to curry multiparty support for new legislation regulating plastics.Bob Masterson, the president and CEO of the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada, said he is disappointed the government is poised to go that route...'We’re uncomfortable with the notion that products that are used every day to keep food safe and sanitary, are going to be declared
toxic,' he said. 'We understand that it’s just a designation for rulemaking, but it will be used as a reason by some campaigners to encourage people to stop using plastics.'"

Talk about being completely detached from reality.

(3/11/20) reports: "Washington State’s Senate narrowly passed SB 5811 this week, paving the way for the Evergreen State to become the 12th to adopt California’s zero-emissions mandate. SB 5811 passed the House in January, and Gov. Jay Inslee is expected to sign the bill. When that happens, the entire US west coast will require that at least 5% of auto sales are EVs, increasing to 8% by 2025...However, in February, Washington’s legislature passed HB 2311, which would require the state to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. That’s more ambitious than the current goal, set 12 years ago, to reduce human-caused emissions of greenhouse gases 50% below 1990 levels by mid-century...Also in February, Washington considered a proposal for the state to refuse to register any new car that runs on gasoline by 2030. The bill failed to advance because it missed a cutoff in the legislature’s calendar. The proposed ban on gas-powered vehicles is still on the table. The bill was co-sponsored by eight
committee heads in the lower chamber. At least 13 countries and several states, including California, have either proposed or started implementing such bans."

(3/11/20) reports: "The Niagara County Legislature officially opposed a state budget amendment introduced by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo in an effort to speed up approval of large-scale renewable energy projects in New York state. On Feb. 21, Cuomo introduced a budget amendment that would set up a state bureaucracy to handle the permitting process for wind and solar developments. The measure is intended to help the state reach a 70 percent 'green' energy source-target Cuomo set for 2030. The measure would provide for the proposed Office of Renewable Energy Siting (ORES), one year to issue a final decision on solar energy projects in New York. If the siting office fails to make a decision on a siting permit within the one-year window, then the permit would be automatically approved. During a meeting on Tuesday, members of the Niagara County Legislature voted to approve a resolution formally requesting the state budget amendment to be withdrawn...Three major renewable energy projects are being eyed
in Niagara County...All three projects have been met with fierce grassroots opposition."

(3/12/20) column: "One of the more confusing questions pollsters have asked Democratic voters to answer this year is whether they would prefer their candidate “return to Obama’s policies” versus pursuing a more liberal (or conservative) course. A modest plurality picked the Obama option...Biden’s rhetorical emphasis seems to imply his plan is no more than the first definition of Obama-ism, winding the clock back to the moment before Donald Trump took the oath of office. But the truth is that Biden has a domestic agenda that, while nowhere near as radical as the Bernie Sanders platform, is almost certainly to the left of anything even a Democratic-run Congress would pass...There is plenty more liberal meat on the bones of Biden’s program. He is proposing more generous subsidies and medicaid funding along with a public option in order to achieve universal health care; a combination of $17 trillion in clean energy investment and a suite of tighter regulation to bring emissions to zero by
2050."
